Today I took the car out and on my way home it started to climb in temperature from 170ish to 195. On my drive to my destination it ran around 170ish and never got hotter. I ran it for a half hour to burp it thinking that it might just need it and it still climbed to 195. Any thoughts on why it would run around 170 and than all of a sudden 195?

Motor is a fresh 355 with 52 miles. Temp sending unit is in the head and I have a 160 degree thermostat.

Fresh rebuilds usually run hotter than an engine that has been broken in and has higher mileage.

This was the longest drive I have taken it on, about 30 miles. It just doesn't make sense with the temp change like I said. You think I should give a few 100 or so and see how it does?

195 is not excessively hot. I suspect that if you put some miles on it, it will drop down some in temperature again like you had before the rebuild.

To answer your original question, I would suspect a thermostat that is not fully opening. Before I started buying the premium Stant thermostats, I've had cheaper versions not fully open, or fluctuate the temperature. I'd pull your thermostat, place it in a pan on the stove and see when and if it fully opens at 160, using a cooking thermometer.

I did that before I installed it and it was fully open around 170. It is a Stewart EMP-300, 160* stat. Today I notice it runs around 180 highway cruising and 190ish on local roads hitting stop lights. I also noticed that the clutch on my fAn is pretty free spinning. Got a fan from a buddy and it doesn't continually free spin like mine, starting to think that mine is ready to retire. So the next step I am going to take is replace that and put a spacer in since only a quarter of the fan is in the shroud. I know 180 is a good temp but I am using a 160 for now until the motor is fully broken in. Also we have the Woodward Dream Cruise coming up and I am going to be cruising (mostly sitting) in a lot of traffic...for those that don't know about the dream cruise, it is worth the 5 miles of sitting in traffic looking at all the sweet cars.

i have a fairly fresh 355 with about 500 klms on it and it has ran about 195 all along since rebuild. seems like a fine temp to me. i have a brand new heavy duty aluminum rad and am running a flex fan with a spacer in mine. my wifes 66 stang runs at 210 to 220 with a built 289.
