Don't leave the forum, too much good info and most of us are well behaved. just use the ignore button on the trolls. Then they are out of sight and mind

Biggest thing is bag and tag everything! Tote bins are your friend too. As far as money, what's really cool with a car like this is you'll get more attention probably with it since you never see them. In a sea of Z28's and a few SS (early 2nd gens) yours will stand out, IMO that's worth the price of admission. I've got a 77 Z28 real deal non matching engine/trans and my 72 Camaro plain Jane I'm going to clone or in todays world "restyled" as an SS 396(402). The 72 might be worth more as a faux Z28 but even with 70-73 everything is a Z28 or 95% are. But I want different... Not into restomods, I'll let the other guys do those, I like them as they were new, except for the horsepower and torque, that can always be better. LOVE the RS paint black and silver is totally too cool. And do as much as possible yourself, these shops and such are edging on insane $$$$ JMO I do 99% myself to lose the minimum if possible.

In 1979 (and 78 for that matter) you could order the RS with the same engine as the Z28. There was nothing different or special about the Z28 350/4B.

I liked the 2-tone paint scheme so this is what I ordered. But mine is not totally stock, I de-smogged it and put on a set of headers as soon as it went off of warranty. I kind of wish I kept the original engine parts but I was young and didn't know any better. I did hang onto the original wheels though, they are sitting in my garage.👍

I don't get mad when people tell me my Camaro isn't very collectable or worth a lot of money. It's all about what it is worth to me.

One "pain" about the RS could be the replicating of the factory "color divider" stripes. BTAIM

FS87LT
When I repainted mine 25 years ago I could find only one source for the RS decals and stripes (there are many sources now so that tells us something).

The whole kit came with pre-bent stripes that separated the colors and RS/Camaro decals for the lower fenders and rear spoiler. The kit was expensive so the guy agreed to sell me just the decals (no pre-bent stripes) for about 100 bucks. The whole kit was like $400.

I found pinstriping that was somewhat close to the original pre-bent stripes. It was a bit challenging doing the tight bends but warming the pinstripe slightly with a heat gun helped a lot.

Sometimes I think about spending the $$$ on the pre-bent stripes to bring back originality. But I worry about pulling the 25 year old pinstriping off of a 25 year old lacquer paint job without damaging the paint. Sometimes it is best to leave well enough alone.

A factory intake can be used if you redrill the head holes of you can use a q-jet style intake for Vortec heads.
This is not correct, and with the 8 massive vacuum leaks that will result from the port mismatch, you'll be lucky to even get it to start, much less run and drive.

I still have my 80 RS that I bought new and couldn't give a rats ass what anybody thinks.
After 45 years I will never sell it and it was the first car my dad helped me buy and he was 47 when he died.
He was always a Chevy man.

I think it's great that you and your son can bond on your restoration. Good luck!
Your RS looks good and has lots of potential.
