Type of manual transmission for 1970 Camaro Z28?

Confused about what manual transmission came standard on a 1970 Camaro Z28. I assumed it was an M22 (rockcrusher), but see some ads listing an M20 or M21. Also, the Hurst shifter rod I had on my former Z28 was a straight round shaft, but I see some pictures with angled rectangular shafts. What was standard?

I believe trans for a 70 was M20 or M21. The factory shifter was round shaft. Others will chime in on the trans.

the standard transmission (s) were forced option transmissions . the three Muncie choices and the TH400 were the only transmissions that you could choose with the Z28 option . there really was no " standard " transmission it was a choice of 4 . they all cost about the same ( 200 dollars ) so it was left to Chevrolet or you to choose . the round SEMI straight shaft is correct .

You could order a 70 z28 with a m20 m21 m22. Just depends on what you ordered. The hurst shifters were always round and angled towards driver. They also came with m40 turbo 400 automatics with column or floor shift.

if you look at original window stickers for the 1970 ( and other years ) the transmission was always listed separate from the Z28 option at an additional cost .

I'm very unsure about being able to order the M-20 Trans with a 70 Z28....

Do we have Window sticker/build sheet, POP documentation

What are the advantages of each?
Is the M22 most preferred?

M22 is preferred due to its rarity and cost. It was a heavy duty version of the M-21 and was extra cost over and above the M-21. The gears were cut at a 15 degree angle, so more power is transferred to the driveshaft due to a bit less friction. The gears also were stronger with a higher nickle content. The downside to the M22 is that due to the straighter cut gears, they whined more then a teenage girl.
