I'm trying to tackle our window regulator and door panel problems. After I finish making one good regulator out of two or three bad ones, I need to replace all the felt pads on the window guides.

I'm pretty sure our 73 should have 3 guides. As it is (driver side door), there is one guide in the middle and one in front and a slotted hole in the rear position that shows evidence (scratching) of having once had a third guide.

The front guide has no felt at all and looks more to be for mounting the door panel than as a window guide. The middle guide has worn out felt and the window is scratched as a result. The rear guide is missing, but I have a replacement.

All of the felt in various locations on the window hardware is worn through. I have seen "kits" on ebay for $25 plus shipping for just the felt pads for one door. That seems pretty outrageous and I was wondering if anyone has found a better/cheaper replacement?

I was thinking of using the fuzzy side of some heavy-duty self-adhesive industrial velcro. Has anyone tried this or something similar?

Also, is there a sticky anywhere about adjusting the window glass properly? The idiot's guide to getting windows and/or doors to align and seal properly?

Scott,

There should be 3 felts per side. Female vlecro, Loop not hook, works very well. While there are several window adjustment posts I do not see on right off the top. Try a seach and cruise the sticky section at the top.

The windows hav a good bit of adjustment and take some time to get just right.

EDITED to add: Here you go.

I aslo have a 1974 Fisher Body manual which outlines the process.

Hope that helps

Brent and Aaron, that is exactly what I needed! Great links to some good help. Thanks guys!

I'll get my regulator repair experiment finished tonight and put those adjustment procedures to the test. Then it's on to the door panels... I'm finding I can waste as much money buying several used so-so panels to piece together one set of good door panels as what new repops would cost. I really don't care if the car has "correct" panels or not. But I do want to install pull straps no matter what style I end up with. The lack of pull straps just leads to very short door panel/pocket life on these heavy doors.

What's the favorite cost vs. appearance vs. quality door panel replacements around here?

Not sure you have too many options as far as mass produced re-pops go. Probably looking at the usual suspects - OER, PUI, etc

BTW: In those links that detail the various adjusting bolts and procedures, I cannot view any photos at all of what they are referencing. Is that because they are old posts and the photos have been deleted or is their some setting on my computer or NastyZ control panel I need to change? Can any of you see the photos those posts refer to?

No, I'm just on my personal laptop. I had to dump the Firefox recently for all sorts of problems and go back to Internet Explorer. I wonder if there are some default settings somewhere that I need to change? Computers just aren't aren't my forte'... And there's no such thing as a "user friendly/idiot proof" computer or program in existence imo... heck, if it weren't for having teenage boys, i'd never figure out the 4 doggone remotes it takes to watch a video movie...
