C4 IRS in Gen 2 camaro. Has it been done?

This was what Art Rasmussen was working on before he died. (10+ years ago)

If I recall he had given up on the C4 rear end and was using something more like a 1990's T-Bird's setup.

The C4 IRS is not "great". They are complicated and the hubs are very stressed by the design.

New thought, I was tearing out the old interior on the 75 last night and then one thing led to anouther. Anyway me and my friend come up with the idea of taking the 05 GTO I have and gutting it and putting the whole interior, drive train, and rear IRS from the GTO into the camaro.

Any thought?

The 05 GTO has the same rearend as the 5th Gen Camaro - which is the basis of the previously mentioned Art Morrison swap.

Ok well that makes sense. The only thing that I didn't like about the Gto rear was wheel hop but I only experienced that @the drag strip with a prepped surface and not on the street so I think it will work for autoX. And I'm sure by now the parts and tuning have been done to solve that problem.

You know what - I think I mixed it up with the G8 which shares the Zeta Platform with the Camaro

There's a lot more to making an IRS work than just getting one picked at random to fit in the car. You really need to design it to work as part of the whole package. Actually that's true of any suspension modification. If you just throw a bunch of parts at the car without doing the design work to make sure roll centers, camber curves, Ackermann, spring rates and so on are correct for you performance goals then you're not going to get optimal results.

Mary's car performs well because David took the time to engineer the system. Also, because Mary is driving it.

If you just want the cool factor of an IRS (and there's nothing wrong with that) then the C4 is a good way to go but there's a good chance that a properly setup leaf spring car could still beat it on an autocross course.

Guess i need to pin david down and learn some things. I have driven many solid axle cars like we all have, and driven quite a range of IRS. Triumph Spitfire, C3C4&C5 Vette, VW Beatle/Baja, 05 GTO, and they all carve corners better than any solid rear car i have driven. Not afraid of homework, just have the GTO on hand and its been sitting for 3 yrs. If i could get close to my goals with some parts upgrades/Tuning on the GTO setup i would be 10 to 20 thousand dollars ahead cause that would solve my interior,dash,engine/drivetrain problems all in one go, no cash out of pocket. but if the GTO IRS wont work ill keep the GTO whole and go back to plan A with the C4 IRS. for the goat its all or nothing

Google Cormaro, Jim Nielsen put an 85 vette under a 1st gen. He has a thead or two over on Pro-Touring.com, maybe look over that car and you can see what hurdles he had to overcome to accomplish that.
